Professor Vidali obtained his Doctorate in Physics at the University of Genoa, Italy. He then received his Ph.D. in Physics from the Pennsylvania State University. He spent two years at the California Institute Of Technology as a Research Associate. He joined the Syracuse University Physics Department as an Assistant Professor in 1984. He won the prestigious Alfred P.Sloan Fellowship in 1986. This Fellowship is awarded to selected young scientists who have extraordinary resarch potential. In 1990 he became Associate Professor.
Professor Vidali is active in experimental condensed matter physics. His group studies the growth of thin solid films on metal and semiconductor surfaces. These studies bear a relationship to the construction of next-generation integrated circuits and devices used in modern electronics. He is also working in laboratory astrophysics. His group is studying how molecular hydrogen is formed on the surface of interstellar dust grain analogues.
Professor Vidali has a strong interest in undergraduate education. He recently wrote a book on superconductivity for the lay reader, entitled "Superconductivity: the Next Revolution?", published by Cambridge University Press. Professor Vidali is currently Project Director for an initiative to introduce computer-based resources in undergraduate courses. Last year he and his team designed the module SETI which you can access from the main Phy105 homepage.
