The purpose of this course is to provide students with intuition about elementary subjects of general physics. The relevant subjects are covered in the PHY211 lecture course. It may happen that the experiments will be done ahead of the lecture, or go beyond the scope of the lecture. Please consult with your PHY211 textbook if necessary.
Lab worksheets to guide you through each exercise will be provided when you come to the class. You will work in a team, most likely with two other people. Each team will submit a single lab report at the end of the lab meeting. Even though all members of the team should contribute to the team discussions, they will have different primary responsibilities during the labs exercises. One person on the team ("Scribe") will be responsible for writing down results and answers into the lab report. Another person on the team ("Leader") will be responsible for proposing next move of the team and what should be put into the report. Finally, the third person on the team ("Critic") will be responsible for rethinking the moves proposed by the leader and possibly suggesting alternatives. If the same team assembles each week, students should alternate on their roles on the team. The reports must be completed and submitted during the class. Members of the team will receive the same grade. Sometimes the team may find it difficult to complete all the measurements and answer all the questions. It is more important to present all the completed measurements clearly rather than to complete all the measurement. When making graphs it is important to label axes and indicate units.
Each report will be graded separately. For the final grade from this course, the lowest grade will be dropped. Alternately, as single missed lab will be dropped from your average. Student's performance during the lab may be included in the final grade. Labs can be make up only in the same week at other regular section. It is recommended to consult with the instructor of the other section prior to the make-up lab. If you arrive late to lab, the TA reserves the right to scale down your score by the fraction of missed lab time.
Your lab instructor will be taking attendance during the lab. In the event of a missed grade at the end of the semester, these attendance sheets will be the only indicator that you attended and completed the lab. If you show up late or leave early, I encourage you to check with the TA that your attendance has been noted.
Academic dishonesty will not be tolerated. Evidence of such behavior will be dealt with in accordance with the College of Arts & Sciences rules.
