  • Instructor: Prof. Mark Trodden, 209 Physics Building, x2564, trodden[at]physics.syr.edu

  • Office Hours: Thursdays 2:00pm - 3:30pm in Physics 209

  • Texts: My intention is that this course will be mostly self-contained, and I will not follow a single textbook exclusively. However, for significant parts of the course I will use

Spacetime and Geometry: An Introduction to General Relativity

    Sean M. Carroll, Addison-Wesley (2003).

This book is on reserve in the physics library.

Grading

Evaluation will be through homework and a written final exam. The breakdown of the final grading is:

  • Exam: 50%

  • Homework: 50%

Homework

Homework will usually be assigned weekly, sometimes every two weeks. In general, it will be assigned on a Tuesday and will be due the following Tuesday. I encourage you to work together on the homework, but the homework you turn in must represent your own understanding and be written up by you alone. Homework that is simply copied will not be accepted.

Homework must be turned in on time at the beginning of class. If this is not possible due to some exceptional circumstances, it is your responsibility to contact me before class (as far in advance as possible) to discuss the matter. Doing the homework will be an important part of learning the material in this course and I strongly recommend that you begin to work on it early and not leave the homework for the last minute.

Exam

The exam will take place in class towards the end of the semester. We will discuss the precise date in class.
