Biology Review/Background

Because of time limitations, the contents of Chapters 20-22 will not be covered
much in class. For the vast majority of students who have had biology at
high school, you should consult these chapters to review concepts, structures,
and terminology. Give special attention to the figures noted below. Any students
who have not studied biology before should read the materials highlighted
below, and arrange to meet with Prof. Lipson if you encounter problems in
reading/skimming these chapters.

Your understanding of the lectures will be facilitated if you have reviewed
these materials. Don't worry that you'll be asked examination questions about
obscure details in these background materials in the text. The examinations
will be based on the material covered in class and your knowledge of the
main points of emphasized readings (e.g. evolution chapter and assigned readings
from Scientific American special issue on cancer). You will be provided
with review materials on this module before the examination.
