Interviews and Biographical Sketches

The interviews below were conducted by Joshua N Goldberg, Professor Emeritus in the faculty of the Department of Physics. They were motivated by the death of a colleague, Arnold Honig, with whom he had had a long close relationship. Along with the loss came the feeling that there were aspects of Arny’s life that he knew nothing about. In particular, where in New York City did he live as a child? Which grade school and high school did he attend? What activities were important to him? When did he begin to think about science? Did he build or repair radios? In other words, what were the early forces that shaped him and prepared him to be a physicist? These were the questions in my mind when I approached Fritz Rohrlich as my first subject. Once the conversations began, the questions went into other directions of their lives and eventually focused on what each thought were his important contributions to physics. Along the way, social and political discussion was hard to avoid. The result is a brief description of a whole life - touching on, but not exploring the family. Based on the interviews, I wrote a brief biography of each and each was permitted to make corrections and some additions. They are all discursive except for the one of Josh which was conducted by Kameshwar Wali. That is presented in the form of questions and answers. While this collection involves the Emeriti in the Department of Physics at Syracuse University, I hope they will be of interest to colleagues at other institutions and particularly to aspiring students who may see aspects of their own lives in the diversity of the lives that are presented here.
