SCATTERING THEORY

1949: Neutron-Proton and Neutron-Neutron Scattering at High Energy. Physical Review 75, 705 – 724. With Julian Eisenstein.

The title masks the general nature of part of this paper: a generalization of the Faxen-Holtsmark (1927) orbital angular momentum expansion of differential scattering cross sections to an expansion in the total angular momentum. This diagonalizes interactions by tensor forces which may be present in addition to central forces. Tensor forces had just been found (by Schwinger) to be necessary to account for the quadrupole moment of the deuteron.
