Common Entries Contest MOJO1
This is my first Common Entries contest, MOJO1
Reply ONLY by e-mail to momo@physics.ucsb.edu.
Do NOT post answers to any newsgroup.
Entries must reach here by Saturday, May 5th (by L.A. time, zone -7).
Please read the rules below, which differ from Mark Brader's Rare Entries
Contest. The most important difference is that in this contest the object
is to get the most common answer. Another difference is that no answers will
be ruled incorrect.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
0. Pick a number.
1. Name a word beginning with the letter m.
2. Give an antonym of banana.
3. Name a type of mythical creature.
4. Name the creature which you expect to be the third most common answer
to the previous question.
5. Name the most attractive celebrity alive today.
6. Name any country in Europe other than Andorra.
7. State a proverb. (Entries which differ only slightly in phrasing will
be considered the same.)
8. State the most contentious possible topic of discussion on
usenet today.
9. Name a book which was first published sometime in the last 100 years.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
For each of the items above, your goal is to give the most common
response to the question.
Your score on each question is equal to the number of people who give
that answer. If you skip a question you will score 1 for that question.
Your total score is the product of your scores on each question. Your
object is to get as high a score as possible.
NO ANSWERS WILL BE JUDGED INCORRECT. As moderator, I will need to
decide if two answers are the same, but I will not check the answers for
correctness. The object is to get the most common answer, which is not
necessarily the most common correct answer. A general class and a specific
member of that class will be treated as distinct answers.
For example, suppose I ask for a color on the current Canadian flag.
20 people say red, 8 say blue, 4 say white, 3 say maple leaf, and 1 says
leaf. The scores are then simply red=20, blue=8, white=4, maple leaf=3,
and leaf=1. I ignore the fact that blue is not on the current Canadian
flag, that leaf and maple leaf are not colors, and that a maple leaf is a
specific instance of the class leaf.
For my convenience please do not quote this message when responding.
Mail only your answers, and these in plain ASCII or ISO 8859-1 text:
no HTML, attachments, Micros--t character sets, etc. (People who fail
to comply will be chastised in the results posting.)
Your message should preferably consist of just the 10 answers, numbered
0 to 9, and your name. Please make sure that any additional comments or
explanatory notes are clearly marked as such. You can expect an acknowledgement
when I read it. Your email address will be posted in the results if I don't see
both a first and a last name, or an explicit request for a particular form
of your name to be used.
No clarifications will be given during the contest. Multiple entries are
not allowed. Please do not post any discussion of the questions to the
newsgroup or collaborate with other contestants in your entries.
Have fun!
