Common Entries Contest MOJO4

This is a Common Entries contest, MOJO4

Reply ONLY by e-mail to momo@physics.ucsb.edu.
DO NOT POST ANSWERS TO ANY NEWSGROUP!!!
Entries must reach here by Monday, October 15th, 2001, 5:00 P.M.
	(L.A. time, zone -7).

The rules below are essentially the same as those in my previous Common
Entries Contests, with only minor wording differences. For each question
the object is to get the most common answer.

I would appreciate it if entrants would include a note with entry, telling
me whether they saw this contest on rec.puzzles or rec.games.trivia.

[DO NOT POST ANSWERS TO ANY NEWSGROUP!!!]

0. Quote a line or sequence of lines from a book.
(Entries which differ slightly in phrasing or which quote different
lengths of text will be considered the same as long as the material
quoted is sufficient to make clear the text and section being quoted.)

1. Name a person whose last name begins with the letter "A".

2. Name one of the seven deadly sins.
(Answers will be counted as different if they give different words,
even if those words are synonyms.)

3. Write a word which begins with the letter "p".

4. Name a landlocked U.S. state.

5. Name a movie in which Winona Ryder had a major role.

6. Name an activity which humans engage in for leisure.

7. Name or describe a type of phobia (Describing a phobia will be
considered the same as naming it.)

8. Consider the following game known as "Prisoner's Dilemna." You and
another reader from rec.puzzles or rec.games.trivia are placed in
separate rooms, and given two buttons, "C" (for cooperate) and
"D" (for defect). If you both press "C," you will both get
$200 (American), while if you both press "D" you will each get $100.
However, if one of you presses "D," while the other presses "C," the
"D"-presser will get $300, while the "C"-presser will get $50.

You and the other player are to play THREE consecutive rounds of
this game, being informed of the results of each round before the
next round starts. Which button will you press in the first round?

9. Name a type of hard liquor or mixed drink.

For each of the items above, your goal is to give the most common
response to the question.

Your score on each question is equal to the number of people who give that
answer. If you skip a question, or leave it blank, you will score 1 for
that question. Your total score is the product of your scores on each
question. Your object is to get as high a score as possible.

No answers will be judged incorrect. As moderator, I will need to
decide if two answers are the same, but I will not check the answers for
correctness. The object is to get the most common answer, which is not
necessarily the most common correct answer. A general class and a specific
member of that class will be treated as distinct answers. An ambiguous
answer will be treated as a general class consisting of all things which
that ambiguous answer might be interpreted as.

For example, suppose I ask for a color on the current Canadian flag.
20 people say red, 8 say blue, 4 say white, 3 say maple leaf, and 1 says
leaf. The scores are then simply red=20, blue=8, white=4, maple leaf=3,
and leaf=1. I ignore the fact that blue is not on the current Canadian
flag, that leaf and maple leaf are not colors, and that a maple leaf is a
specific instance of the class leaf.

For my convenience please do not quote this message when responding.
Mail only your answers, and these in plain ASCII or ISO 8859-1 text.

Your message should contain the 10 answers, numbered 0 to 9, and your
name. Comments, explanatory notes, explanations of strategy, and
suggestions for questions for future contests are all welcome, but
please place them after your 10 answers, and make sure that they are clearly
marked so as to not be confused with your answers. Your email address will
be posted in the results if I don't see both a first and a last name, or an
explicit request for a particular form of your name to be used.

Clarifications will generally not be given during the contest. Multiple
entries are not allowed. Please do not post any discussion of the questions
to the newsgroup or collaborate with other contestants in your entries.

Have fun!
